The camera is great. It doesn't do so well with large dynamic range, but I can carry the film slr for those. Day to day the dslr is much handier - and! I can post a brand new picture. Due to my schedule, I have a 2 week lag on seeing slides.
The snake was a big surprise as I've never seen such around here. I wrote the ranger and they verified that it is a gopher snake, "called a bull snake back east."
