Thanks everyone! I was quite surprised at how this came out - but oboy I like it too!
Why gif? Ignorance (it's what photshop produced via default settings the first time I "saved to web") and Inertia (a combination of wanting the blog to continue in one format, and of having not really thought about it much.)
One red herring that has haunted my half attention is the glib concept that gif is lossless and jpg is not. However, as I understand it, the loss occurs when writing from jpg, and since my blog images are the sink and not the source, it is a moot characteristic. MF images are relatively low res, and I publish them knowing (expecting, hoping) that people will use them, with or without attribution. I expect to move to jpg soon.

Think about *.png if u want a lossless format ;)
Be aware that when you open/write jpg, the image get worse and worse...
