Via email an expert in such things asked if these were truly sinister slugs - that is, possessing a breathing hole (pneumostome) on the left side of the body instead of on the right. I am a bit stunned that I have never noticed that slugs have but one pneumostome; and here I pride myself on looking around.
I checked the original, and indeed I had not flipped the image horizontally as I need to for slides I have scanned - the matte side of the slides are the wrong side for viewing, but the correct side for scanning. The other side is shiny, and results in less detail. I flipped it and grimaced. It is a muchbetter picture this way.
I believe the reason it that, due to indoctrination by reading, things flow much more easily from left to right, and having principal axes running upper right to lower left feels like white water. Viewer as salmon returning to the headwaters.
YMMV, and particularly I'm curious if any righ to left readers have any opinion.

do these slugs harm people in any way? What is the slimy discharge that comes off of them????

Slugs are harmless to people. The slimey discharge is mucus, and primarily helps with moving around, but also serves as to identify individuals to other slugs.
